Hailing from the pristine atolls of Lordhowe, Lau, and Langa Langa lagoon in Malaita province, Joe Briz is currently surfing the waves of Solomon Islands music in cruise control mode. Ladies and gents, Joe is the new tropical breeze.
Aloha, his first extended play (EP) album is Joe’s first international statement to the world which is due to be released on Friday 20th October 2023, and to be marked with a premiere party at Cowboys Grill Bar & Restaurant on 19th October in Honiara.
Joe was born, raised, and bitten by the music bug in Honiara where he began his quest to become a musician, producer, and songwriter. The 25-year-old artist entered the music sphere in 2017, formed a band called J2C in 2018, and organically groomed his own label 50LO since.
Joe’s determination and journey was met with endless challenges but the unwavering support of family, particularly his mother, illuminated the path ahead for him. In 2021, Joe’s first island-smash ‘hitangimai’ was an infectious hit that can be heard across the 900+ Islands of Solomon. Followed by another viral, ‘karoma’, these early sounds celebrated Joe’s identity and were such fitting odes to his Polynesian heritage.
Switching the cue in 2023, Joe dropped the needle with the love infused melody of ‘Tok Stret’ – and that, my folks, is straight fire times a hundred. It didn’t shed an ounce of doubt for the local radio announcers to press play and let the intro piano roll in with Joe’s humming of the words ‘Tok Stret’, setting the tone into a smooth melody. For social media users, especially Islanders music trends on Tik Tok, the original 'Tok Stret' mix together with the unplugged rendition of ‘Tok Stret’ were just the calmest vibe yet.
As Honiara counts down to the Aloha EP launch premiere party, an exclusive question and answer (Q&A) session with Joe Briz would bring fans, critics, and the broader music community for a deeper dive into the artist’s creative process.
Q: What do you want for your fans and the music community to get from your EP?
Joe Briz: I hope my fans can feel a personal connection to my EP, understand the creative work I put into my music, and absorb more inspiration while enjoying it.
Q: Explain how do you find the energy and spirit in creating your first EP?
Joe Briz: Creating the EP “Aloha” is definitely about drawing inspiration from my own life and feelings. I want to speak up for those who often go unheard, addressing situations that we all go through – this drive, along with my deep love for music that’s a part of our culture, keeps me going.
Q: How do you feel now having your EP ready for launch?
Joe Briz: I’m feeling a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, and I can’t wait to see how the audience reacts to my music.
Q: What goals do you want to achieve from your EP?
Joe Briz: As a musician, I want to share my music with people all around the world. I also hope to connect with those who understand and enjoy what I create. My dream is to make a career out of my love for music, be successful, and make a positive difference in my community. This EP is the beginning of my musical journey to new heights and it’s my way of telling my fans that things are getting started – officially.
Q: Can you share a bit on your plans and what’s next after this EP?
Joe Briz: After the EP is released, I’ll continue to promote it and create music videos to complement the process. I’m celebrating the EP’s release with a premiere party at Cowboys Grill club on Thursday night, 19th October 2023, where I’ll also raise funds to support my music video production. I’ll also be touring the EP in different provinces to connect with fans and share my experiences, plus there’s a chance I’ll be touring overseas next year 2024.
